Guttering & roofline

Gutters, Soffit & Fascia in Rosharon, TX

Beryl dropped between six and ten inches of rain on Brazoria County, with a county high of 11.76 inches near Brookside. Five inch guttering on a tract house was never sized for that.

New seamless aluminium gutters and rebuilt fascia on a home in Rosharon TX

Seamless aluminium guttering in Rosharon costs $9 to $16 per linear foot installed, formed on site from a coil so there are no joints to fail except at the corners and the outlets. The question that matters more than the price is the size.

Volume builders around here fit five inch K-style gutter as standard because it is what comes in the package. On a roof with any real area, or any real pitch, a Gulf Coast downpour generates more water than a five inch gutter can carry, so it overflows at the back edge, runs down the fascia and gets behind it. That is why so many houses in this area have soft fascia at ten years old with the guttering apparently working fine most of the time.

What each part actually does

  • Gutter catches the water leaving the roof edge and moves it to the downspouts. Sized by roof area and pitch, not by habit.
  • Downspouts take it to the ground. Undersized or too few is the second commonest fault after undersized gutter, and it produces exactly the same overflow.
  • Fascia is the board the guttering hangs from, along the roof edge. Wood here rots from behind, from overflow, so by the time it looks bad it has been bad for a while.
  • Soffit is the underside panel between the wall and the roof edge, and it is also where your attic breathes in. Blocked or unvented soffit is the reason a lot of Rosharon attics run at 140 degrees. See roof ventilation.
  • Drip edge is the metal at the roof edge that makes water leave the roof into the gutter rather than curling back under the shingle. Missing drip edge is a leading cause of rotten fascia and it is cheap to fix during a re-roof.

Five inch or six inch?

Six inch gutter carries roughly 40 percent more water than five inch and costs about three dollars a foot more. On a Rosharon roof of any size that is the right trade, and it is the single most common upgrade we recommend during a re-roof because the guttering is off anyway and the labour is already paid for. On a small simple roof with generous downspout count, five inch is genuinely fine.

Why is my fascia rotten when the gutters look fine?

Because guttering fails at the moments nobody watches. A gutter that copes with ordinary rain and overflows four times a year during a real Gulf downpour puts water down the back of the fascia on exactly those four occasions, and wood does not need constant wetting to rot. The other frequent cause is missing or badly lapped drip edge, which lets water curl under the shingle edge and run behind the gutter permanently.

The cheapest moment to do this is during the re-roof

Guttering comes off for a tear-off anyway. Doing fascia, drip edge, soffit venting and gutter upsizing while the roof edge is open costs a fraction of doing any of them as a separate visit, because the access, the staging and the disposal are already there. It is also the only moment you can properly fix soffit intake, which is what makes the ventilation work.

Are gutter guards worth the money?

Under trees, yes. Without trees, mostly not. The pitch is usually made on the basis that you will never clean gutters again, which is not true of any product we have seen: fine debris and shingle granules still accumulate and the guard makes clearing it slower rather than unnecessary. On a lot with pecans or oaks overhanging the roof, they earn their keep. On an open subdivision lot in Sierra Vista, the money is better spent on a bigger gutter.

Gutter, soffit and fascia questions

How much do new gutters cost in Rosharon?

Seamless aluminium guttering costs $9 to $13 per foot in five inch and $12 to $16 in six inch, installed. A typical single-storey home needs 130 to 200 feet, so roughly $1,400 to $3,000 depending on size and downspout count.

Should I upgrade to six inch gutters?

On most Rosharon roofs, yes. Six inch carries about 40 percent more water for around three dollars a foot more, and Gulf Coast rainfall intensity is what overwhelms builder five inch. Beryl put six to ten inches on this county in a day, with a county high of 11.76 inches near Brookside.

Can you replace fascia without redoing the roof?

Yes, though it costs more as a standalone visit than as part of a re-roof, because the guttering has to come off and go back and the access is being paid for twice. If your roof has three years left, do the fascia now. If it has one, wait and do both.

Does soffit really affect my attic temperature?

Substantially. Soffit is the intake side of attic ventilation and ridge vent is the exhaust, and exhaust without intake does almost nothing. Blocked or unvented soffit is why a lot of houses around Fresno and Rosharon run 140-degree attics and burn through shingles early.
